Handbrake Libdvdcss For Mac

Developed by the VideoLAN Project, libdvdcss is a library that can be used to read DVDs without having to deal with decryption. At the same time, the library is also able to read discs that have a different region than your drive which is a must if you want to use Handbrake in order to rip a DVDs using your Mac.

How to Make Handbrake Libdvdcss Workable on Mac OS X El Capitan or Later

If your MacBook or iMac is running on Mac OS X El Capitan or later version and you need to make libdvdcss workable on Mac OS X 10.11 for your Handbrake DVD ripping, you are suggested to prepare yourself mentally. The Handbrake for Mac OS X 10.11 doesn't run as smoothly as the one abovementioned.

Case 1: El Capitan apparently broke Handbrake ripping copy-protected DVDs. Any clue what to do?

Solutions:
1) Disable SIP and reinstall libdvdcss on Mac El Capitan. FIY: SIP means System Integrity Protection, the new security system for OS X El Capitan.
2) Install a copy via homebrew ( a package manager).
3) Move software library to /usr/local/lib instead, which is not protected by SIP.

How to move libdvdcss file to /usr/local/lib?
• Create a new Finder window
• Go to /Library/SystemMigration/History/ through cmd-shift-G (<--copy the path from here also allowed) and manually proceed on inside Migration-some-gibberish/QuarantineRoot/usr
• Copy the libdvdcss.2.dylib file (Cmd-C)
• Apply cmd-shift-G to /usr/local/lib (no copy remember!)
• Take use of cmd-opt-V to move it (not copy) it to this location
• It will ask for your password and should then move it.

Case 2: Current libdvdcss version is 2.8.1 BUT won't install on OS X El Capitan unless it has been installed before upgrading. The problem seems to be that El Capitan does not allow the creation of the necessary folders in usr. If you installed it BEFORE updating to El Capitan then there is no problem. I tried to disable rootless but still no luck

Solutions:
1) Downgrade your El Capitan to Mac OS X Yosemite first and then download & install libdvdcss and OSXfuse on Yosemite before upgrading to El Capitan.
2) Generally, /usr/local can't be found on fresh installs of OS X 10.5 to 10.10. When you update operating system from Yosemite (no /usr/local directory) to El Capitan, /usr/local is generated automatically. If not, there might be something wrong with the El Capitan installer or your system.

The way to fix libdvdcss won't install problem is temporarily disable rootless, create the directory, make sure the 'restricted' flag is not set, and re-enable rootless.

Nor am I inclined to be at the mercy of streaming services like Netflix that may have the feature one day, and due to licensing limits, lose it the next.

DVD drives have NOT been a thing for quite a few years now, so those of you who still have a DVD reader on your Mac (as I do on my 2009 Mac Pro) and haven't yet created digital copies of your DVD collections had better get cracking (intentional pun here) before you no longer have any DVD hardware available to copy them with!

Legality

Copying protected DVDs may or may not be legal in your jurisdiction so please be aware of your local laws and rights on owning and decrypting digitally protected DVDs. All of the software being used in this tutorial is legally and freely downloadable. Application of such software may depend on your local laws.

Get Homebrew

Homebrew touts itself as 'the missing package manager for macOS' and that it will 'install the stuff you need that Apple didn't.' Once installed on your Mac, you'll have access to hundreds of open source packages ready for you at your fingertips. Need to download a youtube video? Open a command prompt and type 'brew install youtube-dl'. Need to cross-compile for another platform? Type in 'brew install gcc'. Want to play Windows PC based games on macOS? Type in 'brew install wine'. It's that easy.

1. Start terminal.
2. At the command line type in /usr/bin/ruby -e '$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)'
3. Hit Return.

5. Enter your Password.
6. Hit Return.

Install the decrypting software

We'll need to make use of the legally grey software libdvdcss. To avoid legal issues, converter software like HandBrake purposefully omits the installation of this library. We can download it separately from our free and open source repository Homebrew.

1. Start Terminal.
2. At the proper enter brew install libdvdcss.
3. Hit enter.

Allow Homebrew to install the library and continue on to install HandBrake.

Install HandBrake

Handbrake is an open source media converter tool that is free to download and use. It can convert media between formats and of course, convert you're DVDs to digital files. Note that with the installation of the libdvdcss library, HandBrake can only convert unprotected DVDs.

1. Navigate to the HandBrake website.
2. Click Download Handbrake.
3. Wait for the download to Complete.
4. Double click the downloaded HandBrake .dmg file.
5. Double click the HandBrake Icon.

Making copies

Once you have all of the requisite software you can now copy your collection.

1. Open HandBrake.
2. Select your DVD to copy.
3. Click Open.

4. Optionally set your quality Preset. I select HQ 480p30 Surround for my films.

5. Click Browse to select your save location.
6. Click Choose.
7. Clcik Start to start encoding.

The length of time to complete will depend on your hardware, the length of the media, and the quality of the conversion.

HandBrake will notify you when the job has completed.

Final comments

DVD at 480p can look old and outdated. Many streaming services have better quality visuals than physical DVDs can provide. So depending upon how much that matters to you, you might find that re-buying your favourite films and shows digitally might be worth the cost in terms of the time and effort it takes to convert them.
